Dem Sen. Chris Murphy rebukes left for mocking ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ singer Oliver Anthony

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has rebuked some on the left for mocking country musician Oliver Anthony. Anthony, who is based in Richmond, Virginia, released a single that poked fun at wealthy elites who have left cities for country estates during the pandemic. Murphy said on Twitter that Anthony’s song “Rich Men North of Richmond” was “brilliant, funny and true.” Murphy added that he’s disappointed to see some on the left making fun of the song because it doesn’t fit into their neat little ideological boxes. “We need more brave artists, not less in this country. Like it or not, Oliver Anthony’s song shines a powerful light on the new class divide,” Murphy wrote. In response to Murphy’s tweet, many Twitter users praised Anthony for his song. Many agreed with Murphy, saying that the mockery Anthony has faced is an example of how people can be quick to shut down ideas or opinions that don’t fit a certain narrative. It appears that Anthony himself has also weighed in on the controversy. In a tweet, he thanked Murphy for his support and said that he was grateful for people recognizing the truth in his song.
