IHOP has rolled out a new menu nationwide for the first time, featuring biscuits as a main entree. The move comes as the chain fights slowing sales and increased competition from fast-food rivals.
The new menu, "The Original Biscuits," includes variations such as Country Fried Steak and Chicken Fried Chicken served with a biscuit. Other options include an Ultimate Bacon and Cheese Biscuit sandwich, a Big Gainz Biscuit Burger and various breakfast sandwiches.
The biscuit entrees are being promoted as a "culinary evolution" that marks a new era for the chain. IHOP hopes the new menu items will help boost sales and set it apart from other fast-food restaurants.
IHOP has been struggling in recent years, as fast-food chains such as McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's continue to undercut established full-service chains in terms of price and convenience. IHOP's sales fell nearly 3 percent in the most recent quarter, while its parent company Dine Brands Global Inc. reported profits that were down 23 percent from a year earlier.
The chain is also facing competition from delivery services like DoorDash and GrubHub, which make it easier for customers to get their meals without leaving home. IHOP is hoping the new biscuit menu will not only redeem its waning numbers, but attract a new set of customers who crave comfort food.
