Three Mile Island nuclear plant to help power Microsoft’s data-center needs
Microsoft announced plans to purchase renewable energy from the decommissioned Three Mile Island nuclear plant. The tech giant intends to transform the site into a solar farm as part of its commitment to renewable energy and to powering its data centers with 100% renewable energy.
The project will involve the installation of solar panels on the site of the former nuclear power plant, with an expected capacity to generate around 180 megawatts of power. This is enough to power roughly 70,000 homes in a year.
Microsoft's move is part of a growing trend among tech companies to reduce their carbon footprints. The benefits of using solar power include reduced greenhouse gas emissions, job creation, and less reliance on fossil fuels.
Through such renewable energy initiatives, Microsoft is aiming to be carbon-negative by 2030. This means the company will remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. This project, and others like it, represent Microsoft's commitment to environmental sustainability and renewable energy.
