Ukraine’s president signs law banning Russia-linked religious groups

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed into law a bill that bans religious organizations linked to "aggressor states". This is interpreted to mean entities associated with Russia, whose Orthodox Church—the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC)—has deep historical and cultural ties in Ukraine. The legislation, which the Ukrainian parliament passed in January 2022, comes amid continuing tensions between the two nations. The law aims to restrict the ROC's operations in Ukraine, as it is thought to support Kremlin interests. However, the law has sparked controversy, with critics stating that it infringes upon freedom of religion. Supporters argue it is necessary for national security. The law stipulates that religious organizations connected to an aggressor state cannot participate in public events, organize or finance charity events, provide religious education, property management, or publish religious literature without permission from the Ukrainian authorities. Moreover, such groups won't be allowed to invite foreign preachers to the country. This move is part of Ukraine's larger efforts to reduce foreign (especially Russian) influence in the nation following Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 and there's an ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
