Volcano erupts in Iceland after weeks of earthquakes
On March 19th, 2021, a volcano erupted in Geldingadalur in Iceland, near the capital of Reykjavik. The eruption was preceded by weeks of seismic activity, including a magnitude 5.7 earthquake that shook the region. The eruption spewed smoke and ash into the sky and created a small lava flow. Its impact was felt locally, as far away as 40 miles (65 km). While no fatalities were reported and no homes or businesses were lost, Iceland's Civil Protection Department continues to monitor the eruption around the clock.
