Sen. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio ban the term ‘Latinx’ in new bill: ‘ridiculous terminology’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) have proposed legislation that would ban the term “Latinx” from government documents and official communications. The bill, which was introduced on Wednesday, is called the “Preserve American Traditions and Terminology Act.” Cruz and Rubio allege that the term “Latinx” is a “ridiculous terminology” and is not actually derived from any Spanish dialect or language. They also argue that the term should not be enforced because many Hispanics prefer to be identified by their country or region of origin. The bill would prohibit any federal agency from using the term “Latinx,” and any federal employee who does could be subject to disciplinary action. The sponsors of the bill argue that as a national language, Spanish should be respected and consistent with its historical roots. This is not the first time Cruz and Rubio have attempted to challenge the term “Latinx.” Last year, the senators submitted a letter to the Biden administration demanding the term be removed from official documents.
