House GOP majority officially whittles down to 3 seats after McCarthy resignation

Republicans will no longer have a majority in the US House of Representatives after the resignation of California representative Kevin McCarthy. Following the resignation, the party's majority will come down to three seats. Republicans maintained a majority in the House from 1995 to 2021, but with McCarthy's decision to step down and California's top-two primary system, which allows for two candidates from the same party to move on to the general election, Democrats are now poised to take over the majority in the 2022 congressional midterm elections.
