Michigan Supreme Court allows Trump to appear on 2024 primary ballot

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled unanimously on January 19, 2021 that former President Donald Trump is allowed to appear on the state's 2024 presidential primary ballot if he chooses to run again. The ruling overturned a lower court's decision in 2020 which held Trump must meet certain requirements in order to be eligible and revoked the ballot access he had been granted. The Supreme Court stated that there was no basis in law to require any such qualifications and that, because the state does not regulate the qualifications of candidates in its primary elections, the decision to place candidates on the ballot falls exclusively to the state party. The court thus determined that the state Republican Party had the right to place Trump on the ballot.
